What is DMP?

Dance Movement  Psychotherapy (DMP) recognises body movement as a form of communication and expression; movement, dance and rhythm are some of the most accessible ways in which we find connection with others. DMP sessions provide the opportunity to explore forms of self-expression in a safe and supportive therapeutic environment.

Who is DMP for?

DMP is for anyone seeking therapy and the opportunity to work through troubling feelings and experiences. It may be particularly helpful for those who enjoy movement, dance or drama, or for those who find talking difficult. It is suitable for people of all levels of mobility and no previous dance experience is necessary.

DMP can help clients who experience anxiety and depression, or feelings of panic or stress which may be associated with neurodiverse needs such as ADHD and autism. It can also help those whose life experiences leave them feeling detached or uncomfortable in their body.

Clinical trials have shown that arts therapies such as DMP have a positive effect on those living with depression, schizophrenia and medically unexplained symptoms.

For people living with schizophrenia, DMP can provide support by using movement of the body to help regulate disordered speech and experiences of physical distortions of the body; it offers an opportunity to express feelings and emotions nonverbally; and it offers the possibility for connection where many people living with schizophrenia often feel isolated.  Finally, even small amounts of movement can help counteract the inertia often caused by antipsychotic medication, and offers a different experience of the self. The NICE guidelines cite the arts therapies, including dance movement psychotherapy, as a way to help yourself  and work through your  problems.

I have several years of experience of working with people who live with schizophrenia. Please get in contact with me if you live with schizophrenia or support someone who does, to discuss your requirements in more detail.
